Why Spiritual People Need to Vote

Spread the love

BY TAMI SIMON, Founder & Publisher, Sounds True

Are you a United States citizen, and if so, are you registered and planning to vote in the upcoming Presidential election?

I am asking this question because I care deeply about people voting on November 8th. I am writing this note specifically to you—to someone who is connected with Sounds True—which means you have an interest in personal transformation and spiritual awakening. I am asking you to please be informed about the issues at stake in this upcoming election, please be sure to be registered, and please vote!

Sometimes on the spiritual path, we can become disenchanted with the world and choose not to engage with the politics of our time, perhaps because we feel detached in some way or that we are taking some type of “long view” of human evolution. Perhaps we are “leaning out” because to lean in requires that we come into contact with too much drama, too much nonsense, too much insanity. Or perhaps—from a darker perspective—we are just too self-involved to care.

One way I think of this “detached” or “indifferent” posture is that it is a potential shadow aspect of the spiritual path. Sometimes when we deeply connect with a sense of eternity and vastness—you could call it “the transcendent dimension”—we lose touch with the physical world and the needs that are right in front of us. I think of this as a shadow aspect because it is not inclusive. What is being excluded, the shadow if you will, is the “immanent dimension”—the demands of our time that are right in front of us.

An integrated spiritual path, one that honors both the transcendent and the immanent, wildly opens our hearts and connects us with our immediate surroundings, our communities, and our citizenship. Anything less than that does not serve the needs of our time—a time which calls each of us to express our love and caring in every way possible, which includes voting this November!
